Hey

Six months!!!

That is how long I refused to use Claude.

Not because I tested it and it was bad. I never even gave it a real chance. I had ChatGPT. I knew how it worked. I had my saved prompts, my little system, my comfort zone.

Every time someone mentioned Claude, I had the same response.

"Why would I switch? I already have something that works."

Classic mistake.

Then one day I needed to write something long and structured. A full breakdown, specific tone, multiple sections. ChatGPT kept losing track halfway through. I rewrote the prompt three times. Still felt scattered.

A friend told me to try Claude for that specific task.

I did not want to.

But I was frustrated enough to try anything.

Claude did not just complete it. It understood what I was going for. Tone stayed consistent. Structure was clean. It felt like it actually read my prompt.

That was the moment I stopped being a ChatGPT loyalist.

But here is what made me embarrassed later.

I started using Claude the exact same way I used ChatGPT. Just typing into the chat box and hoping for magic. And I kept getting average results and wondering why.

Then I learned how Claude actually works.

And it changed everything.

The problem is not Claude. The problem is that almost every beginner skips the basics and jumps straight to trying advanced things. They see YouTube videos of people doing crazy things with Claude and they try to start there.

That is like watching a chef make a five course dinner and deciding that is also going to be your first time in the kitchen.

You skipped the part where you learn to chop vegetables.

So here is the proper beginner path. Step by step.

Step 1: Just talk to it first

Go to Claude.ai and sign in. Free to start.

You will see a prompt box in the center and a sidebar on the left where your chats live.

Do not touch anything fancy yet.

Just type something simple. Ask Claude to write a quick email. Paste in a paragraph and ask it to summarize. Ask it to explain something you have been curious about.

Here is the thing most beginners miss: Claude is a conversation, not a one shot command.

Your first prompt does not need to be perfect. You can reply and say make it shorter. Change the tone. Add this detail I forgot to mention. That back and forth is where the real results come from.

Spend your first ten minutes just doing this. Nothing else.

Step 2: Upload a file

This is where most people have their first real "okay, this is actually useful" moment.

Click the plus icon next to the prompt box. Or just drag a file straight into the chat. PDFs, Word documents, spreadsheets, images. Claude reads them and works with the content directly.

You spent weeks copying text out of PDFs into ChatGPT just to ask questions about it.

You do not have to do that anymore.

Upload the document. Ask your question. Claude pulls from what is inside it.

That alone saves hours every week.

Step 3: Discover Artifacts

This is the feature that makes Claude genuinely different and almost nobody shows beginners this.

In the sidebar, hover over the more option. You will see Artifacts. Click it. Select create artifact.

You get options: apps and websites, documents and templates, games, and more.

Here is what this actually means.

Most AI tools just give you text in the chat. Claude can create a separate working document you edit, refine, and update without touching everything else.

Say you ask for a product launch plan. Claude does not dump it in the chat. It builds it in its own workspace. You can highlight one paragraph and ask Claude to make just that part more persuasive. The rest stays exactly as it is.

You can keep going back to it. Keep improving it. Treat it like a real document.

This is the feature most beginners never find because they are too busy trying to do complicated things. Do not skip it.

Step 4: Create a Project

Once you start using Claude regularly, you will notice chats piling up everywhere. You cannot find anything. Everything feels messy.

Projects fix this.

A Project is a space where related chats, files, and documents live together. Working on a client, a content series, a product? One project. Everything about that topic stays in one place.

The powerful part: inside a project, Claude can reference everything you have added. It knows the files you uploaded. It knows the work you have already done. You stop explaining context from scratch every session.

You can also add standing instructions to a project. Instead of typing "always write in bullet points" every single time, you set it once. Claude follows it automatically in every chat inside that project.

This is the feature that turns Claude from a cool tool into something that actually fits how you work.

Step 5: Connectors come last

Once you are comfortable with the four steps above, Claude can also connect to your other apps. Email, calendar, files, other services. Click the plus icon and look for connectors.

But here is the key point.

Do not start here.

This is exactly what most beginners do. They hear about integrations and automations and they try to set those up on day one. Before they have sent twenty prompts. Before they understand how Claude thinks.

Then they get frustrated and say Claude does not work.

It is not Claude. It is the order of operations.

Build the foundation first. Connectors become powerful once you already know what you are doing.

My Final Thoughts

I stayed on ChatGPT for six months because switching felt like starting over.

What I did not realize is that starting over takes about thirty minutes if you follow the right path.

Type something. Upload a file. Create an Artifact. Set up a Project.

That is it. That is the whole foundation.

The people getting bad results from Claude are skipping these steps and blaming the tool. The people who spend one proper session on the basics are getting results that actually change how they work.

You now know which path to take.

Stay curious, talk to you tomorrow.
