Claude Chat, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork. What is the difference?

Most people only know Claude Chat. That is the browser version at claude.ai. You type, it answers. Great for quick questions, writing help, or brainstorming. Most people use only this and never go further.

Claude Code is different. It is a terminal tool built for developers. It writes, runs, and fixes actual code on your machine. Powerful, but not built for the average person running a business or managing their work.

Claude Cowork is the third product, and it is the one that changes everything for non-technical people.

Cowork is a desktop app. It connects Claude directly to your actual files on your computer. Not copies of your files. The real ones. You give Claude a workspace folder and it reads your documents, writes into them, remembers what you worked on last time, and builds a system around how you work.

Think of Claude Chat as a very smart employee you have to brief from scratch every single day.

Tip 1: Use Obsidian as your Markdown Translator

Cowork stores all your instructions and memory in .md files. Markdown files. If you open them raw, you see a wall of hashtags, asterisks, and brackets. Editing them that way is painful.

The fix is simple and free.

Download the app Obsidian. Open your Cowork workspace folder as a vault inside Obsidian. Every .md file instantly renders with proper headings, bold text, and clean formatting. Reading and editing your Cowork instructions becomes as easy as using Notion or Google Docs.

You do not need to learn Obsidian. You do not need any of its advanced features. Think of it purely as a lens that makes your Cowork files readable.

One extra setting worth enabling: go to Settings, then Files and Links, and toggle on "Show all file types." Now your Obsidian sidebar shows PDFs, images, and spreadsheets alongside your .md files. Everything in one place.

Tip 2: Keep Your CLAUDE.md Under 300 Lines

Your main instruction file, called CLAUDE.md, loads every single session. Every word in it costs tokens. A bloated CLAUDE.md slows Cowork down and burns your usage.

One expert who has been running his entire business on Cowork for three months cut his CLAUDE.md from over 600 lines to under 250. His token usage dropped by roughly 25 percent.

Here is how to keep yours lean:

Organize your file into six clear sections. A memory system section that tells Cowork to read your memory file at the start of each session. A preferences section for your tone and format. A rules section for the things Cowork should always or never do. A routing map that tells Cowork which workstation to load depending on the task. A references section with short one-line pointers to files that load only when needed. And a section for how to create new workstations.

The routing map section alone saves a huge amount of space. Instead of dumping all your email workflow rules into CLAUDE.md, you just have one line: "For email tasks, load Email HQ workstation." The full rules only load when you actually need them.

Keep it between 200 and 300 lines. That is the rule.

Tip 3: Put Your Memory on a Diet

Your memory file, called MEMORY.md, also loads every session. Left unstructured, it becomes a bloated wall of random notes that actually makes Cowork worse, not better.

Give it three sections. Active Projects, which is everything you are currently working on with a short status. Scheduled Tasks, which tracks recurring automated jobs. And Core Memory, which holds stable facts about you that do not change often.

Then set two hard rules inside your CLAUDE.md.

First: every memory entry is one to two sentences maximum. No paragraphs.

Second: 150 lines is the hard ceiling for your memory file. When you hit it, Cowork compresses and archives. The ceiling never moves.

When Cowork archives old memories, they go into a separate file called ARCHIVE.md. This file does not load at session start, so it costs zero tokens. But when you ask "what happened with that project three months ago?", Cowork checks the archive and finds it immediately. You get permanent memory without paying for it every session.

That is the system. Lean memory at the top. Full history in the archive.

Tip 4: Move Your Claude Projects into Cowork

If you have been using Claude Projects, this tip is the most important one for you.

Claude Projects are useful. But they have real limits. To update your instructions, you have to manually click in and type changes. Your project memory is a paragraph the AI wrote that you cannot easily edit or structure. And if you link a Google Doc as a knowledge file, Claude can read it but cannot write back to it. You still have to copy and paste manually.

Cowork fixes every single one of these problems.

The migration is straightforward. Your Project Instructions become a workstation CLAUDE.md file. Your Project Memory becomes a workstation MEMORY.md with clear labeled sections. Your Knowledge Files go into a Resources folder inside the workstation.

Tip 5: Know the Difference Between a Workstation and a Skill

This is the question most new Cowork users get wrong.

A workstation is for processes that require your judgment along the way. Writing, planning, brainstorming, reviewing. Work where the path changes depending on what you find or decide mid-task.

A skill is for tasks where you already know exactly what the output should look like and you just need Cowork to execute it perfectly every time. Formatting a document in a specific way. Generating a weekly report in an exact structure. Running a defined checklist.

The simplest test: does this task require me to make decisions in the middle of it? If yes, it is a workstation. If no, it is a skill.

Most people try to turn everything into a workstation because it feels more powerful. But overloading your workstations with tasks that should be skills makes everything slower. Skills handle execution. Workstations handle judgment.

Get this distinction right and Cowork becomes a completely different tool.

My Final Words

I spent months treating Claude like a smarter search engine.

I was getting value. But I was leaving most of it on the table.

Cowork is not a feature. It is a different relationship with AI. Instead of you briefing Claude every day, Claude starts briefing you. It knows your work. It knows your history. It knows your rules. You just show up and build.

The five tips above are not shortcuts. They are the foundation. Get the foundation right and everything else compounds.
