Why Your GPT-5 Prompts are failing???

Before we jump into the fixes, it’s important to first understand the two big changes OpenAI made in GPT-5 that make old prompting styles less effective.

1. Model consolidation and the invisible router
Earlier, there were many different models to choose from. Now there are only three main options. To manage this, OpenAI uses an invisible router that decides which model should handle your request.

The issue is that this router doesn’t always pick the best one. If your prompt is too simple, it might send it to a faster but weaker model to save costs. That leads to poor-quality responses.

2. Surgical precision
GPT-5 has been trained to follow instructions with extreme accuracy. This is great for building AI agents, but it creates problems for everyday use. The model is now bad at “guessing” what you want if your prompt is vague or unclear.

5 simple fixes for your ChatGPT-5 prompts

1. Router nudge phrases (very easy)
   Add a tiny line at the end of your prompt to force the deeper model. Works great for high stakes tasks.

   Try any of these:

   "Think hard about this."

   "Think deeply about this."

   "Think carefully."

   When it kicks in you often see a thinking indicator and the answer has more nuance.

2. Control output length (very easy)
   Tell the model how long you want the answer.

   Simple phrases that work:
   Low detail: "Bottom line in 100 words or less. Use markdown."

   Medium detail: "Keep it to 3 to 5 short paragraphs."

   High detail: "Give a detailed breakdown of 600 to 800 words."

   Use low for Slack or quick notes, medium for summaries, high for briefs or reports.

3. Use a prompt optimizer (medium effort)
   OpenAI has a tool, but you can do it inside ChatGPT too.

   Ask the model to rewrite your prompt so it is clear and structured.

   Example meta-prompt to paste in ChatGPT-5:

You are an expert prompt engineer for [model].  
Rewrite my prompt to be clear, structured, and error-proof.  
Return only the improved prompt inside a code block.  

Here is my prompt:  
[PASTE PROMPT HERE]  

4. XML sandwich (medium effort)
   Label each part of your input so GPT-5 knows what is what. Use simple tags like these:

Act as the hiring manager. Based on my resume and the job description, ask the three hardest behavioral questions I might face.

<MY_RESUME>  
[Paste resume]  
</MY_RESUME>  
<JOB_DESCRIPTION>  
[Paste job description]  
</JOB_DESCRIPTION>  

This makes the model understand the pieces and follow instructions much better.

5. The perfection loop (high effort)
   Let the model define a world-class answer, grade itself, and improve until it reaches that standard. Use this flow:

1. Create a checklist for a world-class answer for [task].  
2. Now write the answer.  
3. Grade your answer from 1 to 10 using the checklist.  
4. Improve the answer to reach 10. Repeat until score is 10.  

Mastering GPT-5 is about learning how to work with the changes, not fighting them.

Start with easy fixes like router nudges and verbosity control, then move to structured prompts and the perfection loop for bigger tasks.
